The history of Herdade do Perú dates back to 1715, when the King of Portugal, D. João V and his wife, Queen D. Maria Ana of Austria, visited the palace of António Cremer and his wife Catarina Sofia Cremer Van Zeller in the former “Sítio do Perum”, vineyards with a wine press and later a winery.
The Cremer family came to Portugal at the invitation of the Marquis of Pombal, with the role and responsibility of managing the Pólvora do Reino.
After the grandparents of the current owner continued this long legacy in the last century, in 2017, he decided to replant vineyards and resume production in a sustainable way, in honour of this blessed land and the proud history of this property and family.
The Herdade has 300 hectares, of which 12 hectares are vineyards.
Planted grape varieties: Arinto, Alvarinho, Cabernet Sauvignon, Verdelho, Cercial, Merlot, Moscatel de Setúbal, Syrah, Touriga Nacional and Castelão. The entire vineyard is certified as organically produced. No pesticides, insecticides or herbicides are used in the vineyard. No chemicals are used in the vineyard. Only zero residue products are applied. The estate is mainly home to cork oaks, but also pines, olive trees, wild olives, orange trees, lemon trees, strawberry trees, plane trees and ash trees. The organic matter from the cattle is incorporated into the vineyard and stored for 12 months. The winter sheep enter the vineyard and eat the grass while also manuring the vineyard, avoiding the use of herbicides.
