For centuries, the Pato family's history has been linked to the world of wine in the Bairrada region. It all began with Mário Pato, one of the first to teach oenology in Portugal. The legacy has been passed down from generation to generation, and today it is Luís Pato who continues his great-uncle's mission.
Luís was one of the pioneers in marketing his wine abroad. It is said that, more than 30 years ago, he carried bottles of Baga, Bical and other native varieties from the Bairrada vineyards in his suitcase, surprising even the most knowledgeable and sophisticated sommeliers, importers and wine lovers with his wines. Wines of unmistakable character that combine unique geographical conditions and elements of the region. From the cool climate, the Atlantic influence, to the fruity character of the clay-limestone soil on the mid-slopes of the small mountains of Óis do Bairro, to the elegance, balance and delicacy of the fermentation and aging process in oak; A whole set of elements that, combined, conferred (and still confer) good aging potential.
It can be said that, at the time, Luís was a lone rebel for carrying out a "revolution" in a dormant region, unaware of its complexities and natural riches. Today, the heritage of the old vines and the future for Baga, Bical and other suspected native varieties seems assured. The rebellious spirit prevailed.
