The village of Castelgiocondo dominates from above the historic Frescobaldi estate in Montalcino, an ancient fortress built in 1100 to defend the road that led from the sea to Siena. The property is one of the first four from which, in 1800, the production of Brunello di Montalcino began and its historical importance is demonstrated by the figure of the knight depicted on the labels of Castelgiocondo wines, taken from a famous fresco by the Sienese painter Simone Martini. The artist painted Guidoriccio da Fogliano, commander of the troops of Siena, who led the attack on the castle of Montemassi. A historical coincidence that saw, at the same time as the exploits of the knight, the Frescobaldi begin their centuries-old adventure in the world of wine.
